Getting ready for inspection by our campers!

The opening of the gates is fast approaching, and all the jobs are getting completed.IMG_7111

At this time of the year, we always think back to the previous seasons and most importantly what we have learnt along the way.  As a lot of regular guests will know, we were complete novices when we arrived here back in 2012, and so we had to learn quickly.

One thing we learnt quickly is that we cannot be all things to all campers.  We came here with a good idea of how we wanted our campsite to be, and we have pretty much stuck to this.  Our general idea and ethos,  seems to work well. So many of our guests comment on the extremely relaxed, respectful and very friendly atmosphere on the campsite, which is created by our guests.

However, we do also like to learn from our guests, and there are always ways we can improve the campsite, even if it is just tweaking, whilst staying true to ourselves and not resting on our laurels.  This is where our guests reviews come in very useful indeed, although of course this is only one way to use independent reviews.  Reviews are great for us, and it enables new guests to get independent views of The Meadows before making the all important decision as to is it a campsite for them!

John and I, of and of course Harvey too who often gets a mention really appreciate the feedback you give us, and it is great for us to know that we are making our guests happy.

Some of our favourite comments, although there are so many that make us smile,

“WOW!! That just about sums up the The Meadows…
Lovely owners, Lynn is very attentive and knows just about everywhere to go to have a good time.

We loved the pop up cocktail bar and pizza guys. The pizza was soooo delicious.
They had two very happy campers even if the weather was a bit hit and miss. Loved the campfires and the IMG_0992decorated tents. I would highly recommend The Meadows. Peaceful, fun and delightful. Thanks for having us!”- August 2015.

“We loved it so much we have already sent in a request to go back next year!! We arrived as guests and left as friends. Can’t wait to go back! Thank you again”  – August 2015

“the best compliment that we can pay is that we had booked for a 2 week holiday, but enjoyed the area and site so much that we booked for my wife to stay for an extra week whilst I had to return to work 🙁 – the benefits of working in a school I suppose!!!!
We will be back to this great site – well done to John and Lynn for creating a fantastic place to stay” – August 2015
“We have just returned from a week ‘proper camping’ at The Meadows and I would happily turn the car around and drive back and stay there forever”  August 2015

“We had yet another wonderful week at The Meadows. Lynn, John and Harvey are the warmest, friendliest owners you could wish to meet. They have all the information you could possibly need for a fantastic break in St Austell. The campsite is refreshingly relaxed as far as bringing along your additional family members, ie dogs, cats, and even parrots – although, of course, common sense must prevail. We enjoyed freshly made pizzas and cocktails which were delicious. Sadly we missed Fish and Chip night but are assured these are just as good. The amenities are exceptionally clean and up-to-date, ie the shower rooms are very spacious. Everything you can possibly need to have a fabulous holiday is here in this wonderful little campsite.” July 2015

“In five or so years of touring in our campervan, this has to be one of the best – if not THE best – site we’ve stayed at. Striking the right balance between rural, small and friendly and yet professionally run with immaculate facilities isn’t always easy, it seems, but The Meadows has got it spot on. From the moment we arrived, to be greeted by Lynn with a warm welcome and helpful and practical information about the area, we felt at home. The site is relaxed and casual, but there’s no mistaking the ongoing work that Lynn and John put into making this such a wonderful place to stay.”

“We booked as a group some months back as stumbled across this delightful adult only campsites website by accident. What a find!

John and Lynne made us feel incredibly welcome as soon as we arrived, guiding us to our pitch and explaining about all the amazing things to see and visit in the area.

The site is excellently maintained and both John and Lynne work tirelessly to ensure the site is extremely clean, tidy and pleasant, we don’t think that we have ever seen a couple work so hard and such long hours on a campsite before.

The toilets and showers are spotlessly clean, with regular cleaning done throughout the day.

Decent sized pitches and the added bonus of John replenishing the fire pit each night was very welcome.

These two have certainly got a campsite to be proud of and do an amazing job, just a shame that their weather forecasting skills are not up to par ha ha.

A lot of campsites in Cornwall could learn a lot of from these two.”

And the one that got Camp Dog Harvey his last warning….
“I have to say though that Harvey the chief of camp security has clearly been promoted well beyond the limit of imagehis guard dog ability and might need a new job description such as chief snoozer.”
Bookings
For those wanting to stay with the comfort of electric, then you need to hurry up and book as pitches are now very limited during high season, and for the second part of June.  You can contact us here, or telephone 01726 844383.
28 days to opening and counting down …………..
Finally, for those who have just stumbled upon us, we are a smallish campsite just for grown ups, dog and campfire friendly, close to the coast, Eden, Heligan and Mevagissey.  We are good for walkers, cyclists, and foodies, and those who just want a relaxing holiday with lots to see and do close by.

Walking & Camping go hand in hand…………

WalkingDSC_6759

If you are going to be visiting this season, then you will have seen from our website and my  previous blog that you are not going to go hungry.

This means you need to “walk” up an appetite and, how nice is it to combine foodie camping with walking.

Top tip

DSC_6544Prior to your trip have a look at a fantastic website for walking in Cornwall which we use a lot – iwalkcornwall.co.uk.  There are lots of very local circular walks around Pentewan, Mevagissey, and Charlestown, which can be walked straight from the campsite gates and without getting in the car.  There are also walks if you are staying longer and venturing further afield.

For keen walkers it is worthwhile getting the app and then for a very modest fee (worth it not to get lost)  you can download individual walks to your phone.

It is also worth looking at our own cycling & walking page for our walking highlights, of which there are so many. The location of The Meadows Campsite, (adults only & dog friendly) on the local bus route, and close to Mevagissey for the Fowey Ferry, means there are so many options to leave the car behind.

All you camping dog owners have got to agree that there is nothing better than a tired out pooch back at camp! Also most walks around here can include a dog friendly pub!

Just a short one for now as I need to work off all those Easter Eggs.

Counting down to opening for our season number 4…..

Posted on March 23, 2016 by Comments Off on Counting down to opening for our season number 4…..

DSC_0439Spring has most definitely Sprung, and we have put away our working waterproofs for the time being.

We are on countdown to opening now which is fast approaching, but we have everything in hand, or at least we think we have.

It looks like for our opening weekend, we will have a regular group of “wild swimmers” staying with us for a training weekend.  If it is anything like last time it is wild swimming by day, and warming up around a fire pit by night.

The “girls” like their pink house

The outside jobs, of which there are lots, are underway and the painting has begun.  We like being colourful and so we do this job every year to keep a nice fresh feel to the place.   There are even more things to paint this year.  Our grass which is of course extremely important is being well tended to and is far higher maintenance than I am!!  It has had a hard winter, but with sunshine and showers on the forecast ahead, it will soon start greening back up,  and growing.

The pressure washer has had his Spring outing and the deck is all smartened up, and oiled. We just now need new tablecloths, repotting of our table plants,  and of course the awning.

We have been doing a bird watch whilst working outside.  In one days we spotted great tits, blue tits, long tailed tit, chaffinch, Greater Spotted Woodpecker, Buzzard, Nuthatch and an Egret.  There are also Moorhens nesting on the stream bank which is nice.

Cornish hedge and wood stacks

The biggest job of the winter was our Cornish hedge being built, and managing all of the conifer wood.  The former took much longer than anticipated, but we are extremely pleased with the end result.  Our entrance looks extremely smart, and with the conifers gone you can better views up the valley. That is it for this year with wood, but our stacks do look very attractive if we say so ourselves.

IMG_7111Bookings – we must be doing something right, as we get busier year on year.  Already almost all of our hook ups are booked out from mid June until mid August, except for the odd few nights here and there. This has caught us by surprise.  There is still quite a lot of room for “proper camping” (none electric), for both tents, camper vans and those caravanners with their solar panels on board.  You can contact us here, or telephone 01726 844383.

We are a campsite close to Mevagissey and Pentewan, just for adults and very dog and campfire friendly. If you like walking, cycling, or just exploring then we are in an ideal location and just a mile from the South Coast.

S7000414News from Camp Dog – this is my favourite time of the year.  Being a little on the nest side, I tend to stay indoors on work days until the weather is good enough for sun bathing on the deck.  The last couple of weeks I have been outside and it has been lovely.

As it is staying lighter later, we have also been out after work down to Caerhays Beach, imageand also the lovely Vault beach.  These are two of my favourite beaches.  We also made it down on a Sunday morning to the Caerhays Beach Cafe.  It is great there for sitting outside, and I hear there are some great evening events planned for the summer season with guest chefs, music, and comedy.

It is so lovely to see in the booking diary so many doggies booked in already, including a lot of Cavs.  I am already booked in to the groomers, and I have one last stay at my “up country” health farm prior to opening.

Other Meadows News

Apologies if you got caught up with the blip in our “contact” enquiry system.  This was a temporary blip of which we were unaware as it was selective with those it did not transmit.

Posh Pasties & Cider – just mentioning this again as we think this is a great new addition to what will be Lazys pichappening here this season.

Well we are counting down to opening, and we hope that those booked in already are counting down too.  We know one of our guests has  even got a holiday countdown app on the go!

Happy Easter
